🌐Enriching Learning through Experience: Junior 2 International Class Outdoor Education Trip🌐

In line with our teaching philosophy of “enriching students’ life experiences to make learning more exciting,” our Form 2 International Class students, led by their teachers, embarked on a one-day outdoor education trip to Kuala Sepetang (十八丁). This activity aimed to take students beyond the classroom and into the real world, offering them deeper, more authentic learning experiences.
During the trip, students visited Kuala Sepetang’s renowned charcoal kiln factory and the Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve. A professional guide was specially invited to explain the charcoal-making process and the unique structure and functions of the mangrove ecosystem. Students witnessed the production of charcoal firsthand and gained insights into the crucial role mangroves play in maintaining ecological balance.

Additionally, students had the opportunity to plant mangrove saplings themselves and engage in cross-cultural exchanges with international master’s students from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT). Through these interactions, they learned about mangrove reproduction, species classification, leaf structures, and seed forms, while also sharing cultural features of their own countries and ethnic groups, thus broadening their international perspectives and cultural understanding.

This outdoor education experience integrated science and English through an interdisciplinary teaching approach. Teachers designed learning worksheets to guide students in exploring and observing, and after returning to school, students expressed their learning outcomes creatively through activities like drawing.
In summary, this outdoor learning journey not only effectively combined science and English content but also offered students a hands-on experience with the mangrove ecosystem and the charcoal industry.

Through activities like planting mangrove saplings, students enhanced their environmental awareness, critical thinking, observation skills, and communication abilities. It was a cross-disciplinary journey rich in knowledge, experience, growth, and inspiration.
